Project Engineer III –Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls (EI&C)
Contract Duration: Until 01/08/2027 (High Possibility of Extension)
Location: Hamilton Township, MI
Work Schedule: Hybrid work model: Onsite (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) & Remote (Wednesday, Friday).
 
Position Overview
CMS Energy is seeking a highly skilled Project Engineer III specializing in Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls (EI&C) to support engineering activities within the Gas Compression Engineering department. This role is responsible for engineering deliverables associated with modifications and new construction projects for the natural gas compression fleet. The Project Engineer III will collaborate with cross-functional teams—including project management, plant and environmental engineering, operations, construction, and external partners—to ensure projects are executed safely, efficiently, and within scope, schedule, and budget.
Note:
  • Candidates from anywhere in Michigan are eligible;preference will be given to candidates located on the west side of the state to better support facilities in White Pigeon, Overisel, and Muskegon River.
  • Candidates relocating from out of state or residing 60+ miles away may be eligible for a $550/week per diem. If needed, this must be stated in the first sentence of the supplier notes and summary.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of natural gas compression stations and related utility facilities.
  • Serve as a technical expert for EI&C engineering, ensuring compliance with all company standards, industry codes, and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and review engineering deliverables, including plans, drawings, technical specifications, reports, environmental documentation, permits, cost estimates, and schedules.
  • Conduct field investigations, site inspections, data collection, and construction oversight.
  • Coordinate interdepartmentally to ensure clear communication, proper resource allocation, and seamless project execution.
  • Provide technical support to operations, maintenance, outage managers, construction teams, and external partners.
  • Ensure all engineering practices are performed legally, ethically, and in alignment with safety and compliance standards.
  • Represent engineering onsite during project execution to monitor progress and ensure alignment with design requirements.
  • Assist with procurement of engineered materials, equipment, and contracted services.
  • Adapt to evolving project priorities, including emergent work and unplanned outages.
 
Required Skills & Experience
  • Minimum 5 years of EI&C engineering experience (Electrical or I&C acceptable;control systems preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of industrial facilities and/or natural gas compressor station design, construction, or operations.
  • Demonstrated experience with engineering procurement processes.
  • Proven ability to develop and coordinate engineering contract documents, drawings, and specifications.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively while managing changing priorities and project demands.
 
Education & Additional Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program, or
  • 10+ years of directly applicable I&C/Electrical design experience in lieu of degree.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license preferred, but not required.
