Chemistry/Environmental Technician II
Duration: Through 10/18/2026, with potential for extension based on performance and team needs.
Location: Campbell Generating Complex, West Olive, MI 49460 (on-site)

Position Summary
We are seeking a Chemistry/Environmental Technician II to join CMS Energy's team at our Olive Township location. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing critical environmental sampling, testing, and reporting to ensure compliance with both local and federal environmental regulations. The role includes routine laboratory and fieldwork, requiring adherence to strict safety protocols and a commitment to environmental stewardship. This is a full-time, on-site position that supports the 24/7 plant operations and may involve irregular work hours, including weekends and holidays.
 
Key Responsibilities
The Chemistry/Environmental Technician II will be involved in the following tasks:
  • Laboratory Safety & Environmental Sampling:
    • Ensure laboratory safety procedures are followed.
    • Perform potable water sampling, testing, and reporting.
    • Conduct waste water treatment sampling and analysis.
    • Test fuel and oil samples to ensure quality and compliance.
    • Collect and analyze surface waters for reporting to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE).
  • Environmental Compliance & Reporting:
    • Monitor and report on the quality of drinking and surface waters to ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
    • Sample, analyze, and process various waste streams to ensure proper disposal in compliance with regulatory guidelines.
    • Submit accurate reports to both internal stakeholders and external agencies.
  • Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting:
    • Calibrate and maintain laboratory and field instrumentation.
    • Ensure equipment reliability and take corrective actions to address operational issues.
    • Troubleshoot and repair instrumentation, mechanical equipment (e.G., pumps, valves), and inline analyzers.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Work closely with plant operations, maintenance, engineering, and environmental teams to address operational needs and resolve issues.
    • Provide technical expertise and support to supervisors, operators, and engineers in various areas of the plant.
  • Compliance & Regulatory Support:
    • Ensure compliance with environmental regulations regarding water quality, waste management, and waste water treatment.
    • Support waste treatment operations and obtain certifications for Waste Treatment Operator and Drinking Water Operator.
  • Shift and On-call Support:
    • Support 24/7 plant operations, including weekend, holiday, and overtime coverage as needed.
    • Participate in on-call rotation and respond promptly to plant needs.
 
Physical Demands
This position requires the following physical abilities to perform essential functions:
  • Regularly sit, use hands to handle or manipulate objects, and talk/hear.
  • Frequently stand and walk, and occasionally climb, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
  • Visual abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Lift and move materials weighing up to 10 pounds regularly;occasionally up to 35 pounds.
 
Qualifications
  • Education:
    • Associate’s degree in a scientific or technical field, or 48 credit hours in scientific or technical coursework (semester basis).
    • A Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • At least 1 year of experience with NPDES, Storm Water, and RCRA waste management is highly preferred.
    • Experience with analytical laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and waste treatment is ideal.
    • 1+ years of experience performing maintenance or operational activities in power or chemical processing plants is a plus.
    • Experience with SAP and Microsoft Excel is beneficial.
  • Certifications:
    • Waste Treatment Plant Operator Certification(s) preferred.
    • Drinking Water Operator License or the ability to obtain it is required.
  • Skills & Knowledge:
    • Understanding of the thermodynamic steam cycle, power plant systems, and environmental monitoring compliance.
    • Familiarity with environmental monitoring regulations and compliance standards.
    • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent communication skills and ability to work well in a team.
 
Additional Information
  • Hours & Travel:
    • This position may require occasional travel. The candidate should be available to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
    • Rotation of on-call assignments and weekend coverage will be expected.
