Department Summary:
The Substation Engineering department plays a pivotal role in providing multi-disciplinary engineering design and leadership for high-voltage electric distribution projects, specifically for company-owned or operated substations across Michigan's lower peninsula. The team's focus includes in-house and consultant-driven designs for new substations, as well as repairs, upgrades, and other developments related to existing substations. Our work encompasses structural and civil designs, project development, spill compliance, permitting, code compliance, geotechnical analysis, procurement, and construction support.
The Senior Civil Engineer will be an integral part of this team and will specifically support capital projects in a civil engineering capacity.

The Sr. Civil Engineer will be the subject matter expert in civil engineering design and will represent Consumers Energy as the design authority. Regular updates regarding project status, risks, quality, cost, and schedule will be provided to supervisors.

Role Summary:
The Sr. Civil Engineer will be responsible for overseeing various aspects of civil engineering design and construction for several projects. Key responsibilities include:
- Identify & Scope Design/Construction Needs: Define the civil engineering scope required for project completion.
- Contract & Collaboration: Work with contractors and collaborate with engineering teams to ensure project scope is completed effectively.
- Technical Leadership: Provide expert engineering review and technical authority, ensuring that design and construction align with the project's objectives.
- Project Collaboration: Work closely with Project Managers and Project Engineers to support procurement, contracting, and other essential project steps.
- Project Closeout: Manage the closeout activities, including generating record drawings and test records.
The Sr. Civil Engineer will be the subject matter expert in civil engineering design and will represent Consumers Energy as the design authority. Regular updates regarding project status, risks, quality, cost, and schedule will be provided to supervisors.
Site Conditions & Safety Requirements:
- Industrial Environments: Ability to work in heavy industrial environments, such as undeveloped wood sites, rough terrains, and rocky/ballast rock surfaces.
- Electrical Safety: Work in electric substations and near live, unguarded electrical equipment. Safety is paramount.
- Site Visits: Expect to travel to construction sites 1-5 days per week for activities like pre-engineering, milestone reviews, technical problem solving, quality inspections, and red-line walkdowns.
Key Skills & Experience:
- Civil/Structural Design Knowledge: Experience in site design, stormwater management, pre-engineered metal building design, foundation design, structural steel design, and environmental permitting (wetlands, soil erosion, culverts, etc.). Proficiency in multiple areas is highly preferred.
- Contract Documents: Experience in coordinating and developing contract documents, including engineering drawings and technical specifications, for both consulting and construction services.
- Engineering Codes: Working knowledge of industry codes such as NESC, NEC, ASCE MOP 113, ASCE 7, IBC/MBC, AISC Steel Construction Manual, ACI 318, and AWS D1.1.
- Software Proficiency: Experience with RISA, L-Pile, Civil3D, Microstation, ProjectWise, and SAP is preferred.
Personal Skills:
- Strong problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects.
- Strong communication skills to update team members and supervisors about project status, potential risks, and challenges.
- Demonstrated engineering leadership and attention to safety.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
