GIS Analyst
Contract Duration: Through July 10, 2026 (with potential for extension)
Location: Jackson, Lansing, or Saginaw (Other CMS locations negotiable)
 
Position Overview:
CMS Energy is seeking a skilled GIS Analyst to join the Distribution Engineering Services (DES) Department. This position plays a critical role in supporting Natural Gas Distribution Construction projects, ensuring accurate GIS data collection, management, and integration across the project lifecycle—from planning through records development.
The GIS Analyst will support back-office operations by interpreting CAD designs and topographic surveys, creating and maintaining ArcGIS web maps, and producing standardized GIS deliverables. This is a hands-on, data-intensive role requiring attention to detail and a strong understanding of GIS workflows and software tools.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Interpret CAD engineering designs and topographic survey data for use in ArcGIS-based mapping applications.
  • Generate ArcGIS web maps and populate the DES GIS portal with current and accurate data.
  • Process and interpret field-collected GIS data using ArcGIS Pro.
  • Produce and package standardized GIS deliverables for internal stakeholders.
  • Document standard operating procedures and workflows for various GIS project applications.
  • Collaborate with engineering and field personnel to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate GIS data standards and quality control guidelines.
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Geomatics, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with ESRI GIS software, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and Windows OS.
  • Solid understanding of GIS principlesmapping concepts, and GPS technologies.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction and utility drawings.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, logical thinking, and self-motivation.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
 
Preferred Skills:
  • Experience working in utility or natural gas infrastructure environments.
  • Familiarity with field mobility GIS applications.
  • Experience in documenting technical workflows and standard operating procedures.
