Gas Service Designer II
Contract Duration: Until February 3, 2026, with a high likelihood of extension
Work Location: Hybrid schedule with three days on-site (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays) and remote work on Wednesdays and Fridays. Preferred locations include Saginaw, Lansing, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Flint, Livonia, Royal Oak, Groveland, Howell, and Macomb, Michigan. Relocation candidates must cover their own expenses, as no per diem will be provided.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Gas Service Designer II to join our team on a contract basis. The ideal candidate will have a foundational understanding of utility system design and analysis, with hands-on experience using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Geographic Information System (GIS) software. The role involves designing utility projects of varying complexity, coordinating with internal departments, and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize CAD software to create and modify technical drawings and designs, incorporating revisions and ensuring accuracy.

  • Apply utility design and construction standards to ensure compliance with project requirements.

  • Select appropriate materials and components based on project specifications.

  • Analyze and interpret maps, blueprints, survey data, sketches, and project scope requirements to inform design decisions.

  • Plan and consult with internal departments to review project needs, including specifications, reporting, task prioritization, coordination, permitting, and addressing environmental impacts.

  • Prepare and update forms and system application data associated with project work orders.

  • Understand and apply existing departmental standards, procedures, processes, and job aids related to plans, specifications, maps, drawings, and other project documentation.

  • Conduct site visits as needed to collect and verify drawing data, provide construction support, and offer development and training guidance.

  • Perform other duties as assigned or required to support project goals.
Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficiency in CAD software, including MicroStation V8i or V10, AutoCAD, and OpenPlant.

  • Experience with GIS tools and applications.

  • Knowledge of utility operations and construction standards.

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to apply existing computer-based solutions to new challenges.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Technical writing proficiency to prepare reports and documentation.

  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with internal teams and stakeholders.

  • Project planning and coordination experience to manage tasks and meet deadlines.
