Position Overview:
CMS Energy is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II to support Gas Compression operations at the St. Clair Service Center. This role is a temporary six-month position to cover for a full-time employee on paternity leave. The primary focus of this role is to ensure the safe, reliable, and resilient operation of the gas compression fleet by providing technical support for ongoing operations and projects.
The Compression Reliability Engineer will serve as a subject matter expert on engines, compressors, and auxiliary systems at the station. This role involves ensuring that all design standards, compliance requirements, and regulatory guidelines are adhered to. The engineer will also monitor reliability metrics and coordinate project work between internal teams, external engineers, vendors, and contractors.

Key Responsibilities:

Ensure safe and reliable operations of gas compression equipment and systems.

Serve as a subject matter expert for station engines, compressors, and unit auxiliary systems.

Review and approve detailed designs to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.

Monitor equipment performance to ensure reliability metrics are achieved.

Coordinate project tasks with internal teams, external engineers, fabricators, vendors, and contractors to meet project objectives.

Perform problem-solving and causal analysis for equipment failures and system malfunctions.

Provide engineering support for both small and large projects, collaborating with project managers to meet deadlines and budgets.

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from an accredited institution.

Minimum of 2 years of experience in an engineering role.

Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.

Experience using AutoCAD for design work.

Knowledge of the design, construction, and operation of gas compression facilities.

Familiarity with planning and permitting processes related to design and construction.

Experience reviewing designs to ensure compliance with engineering standards and codes.

Experience in the procurement of engineered materials, equipment, and professional services.

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Knowledge of industry best practices for gas compression operations.
