Location: Primary location is Overisel Compressor Station in Hamilton, Michigan or Grand Rapids Area. Some flexibility available for Kalamazoo.
Position Overview:
CMS Energy is seeking a skilled Mechanical Engineer III to serve as an Owner’s Engineer within our Gas Compression Project Engineering team. This role will support both modification of existing infrastructure and new construction projects at natural gas compressor stations.
The successful candidate will act as a technical liaison and project engineering lead, working closely with internal teams, external engineering firms, and construction partners to ensure successful project delivery. This includes managing engineering scope, enforcing technical specifications, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance, and maintaining budget and schedule targets.

Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as the Owner’s Engineer for gas compression projects, providing engineering oversight throughout the project lifecycle.
- Coordinate and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including project management, environmental, operations, construction, and vendors.
- Evaluate and apply engineering principles, theories, and techniques for moderately complex project scopes.
- Develop and enforce engineering, equipment, and construction specifications.
- Support procurement processes, including development of Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and technical evaluations.
- Conduct site visits (average 3 days per week, up to 5 days/week) to compressor stations for field engineering support and construction oversight.
- Ensure adherence to project safety standards, scope, quality, and timeline requirements.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
- Minimum 5 years of applied engineering experience in related mechanical engineering roles.
- Experience with natural gas systems and balance of plant components.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Strong understanding of ASME B31.1, API standards, and technical specifications for gas compression.
- Proficiency in field engineering and project coordination with external EPC partners.
- Familiarity with project management tools and methodologies.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and coordinate with cross-functional teams.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
