  • JOB PURPOSE/ JOB SUMMARY ( in paragraph form) :

We are looking for a full-time storyteller (Freelance) to join our in-house communications team to develop and produce content across our digital channels and platforms, including LinkedIn stories, thought leadership blog posts, employee communications, social media content, newsletters and marketing copy.

Successful candidates for this full-time, contractor position, which can be remote, will be expected to generate high-quality written content appropriate for multiple channels ranging from social media to websites to internal employee communications. They will also work closely with other contractor talent focused on graphic design and video production to create dynamic, engaging materials that maintain a consistent brand voice and visual identity. They will also interact with multiple members of the Corporate Communications team as well as individuals outside the team at all levels of the company to research, write and secure reviews on content.   • KEY RESPONSIBILITIES ( for non-exempt jobs, indicate approximate percentage of time spent on each responsibility):
  • Research industry-related topics (combining online sources, interviews and studies).
  • Create highly engaging, compelling, error-free written content as assigned by the Corporate Communications team that is suitable for multiple channels. Channels will include but are not limited to the following: social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter), internal employee communications platform with the capability to enable sharing on social media platforms, website copy, thought leadership blog-style pieces some of which will be ghost written for members of U. S. Steels leadership team, emails/email campaigns, press releases, video scripts, and copy to accompany infographics and other graphic design materials such as print and digital ads.
  • Work with members of the Corporate Communications team as assigned to research and develop required content.
  • Work with U. S. Steel employees outside the Corporate Communications team as assigned to research and develop content. This could include video/phone conferences or travel to a U. S. Steel facility to interview individuals.
  • Brainstorm content ideas and present to the Corporate Communications team.
  • Work with other contractor talent focused on graphic design and video production to pair content you develop with related visual assets resulting in dynamic, engaging materials that maintain brand voice and visual identity.
  • Maintain U. S. Steels brand voice and tone in all content generated.
  • Use available data to guide copy generation decisions.
 
  • EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :
    • Bachelors degree in communications, journalism, English, marketing or a related major is strongly preferred.
    • Reporter/media newsroom experience strongly preferred. This includes strong interviewing skills to draw out details and information needed to develop required content.
    • At least 5 years of agency, corporate, or similar freelance/contractor copywriting experience is strongly preferred.
    • Experience writing for a manufacturer is desirable.
    • A compelling portfolio of work showing experience and a variety of styles involving multiple channels is required.
    • Excellent editorial, grammar and proofreading skills.
    • Detail-oriented, capable of strong multitasking, able to work independently with limited supervisor, and have strong time and project management capabilities.
    • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills and the ability to work collaboratively with a team.
    • Able to complete assignments within assigned timelines, including quick/urgent requests.
    • Able to take constructive feedback on projects and adapt their work on future projects to incorporate that same feedback.
    • Able to distill highly technical information into more approachable content.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs including, but not limited to, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams and SharePoint.
    • Experience using graphic design platforms/programs such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite (including PhotoShop, InDesign, and Illustrator), etc. Is helpful but not required.
    • Experience using video editing platforms/programs such as WeVideo, Adobe Premiere Pro, etc. Is helpful but not required.
    • Experience working with a digital asset management (DAM) platform such as Bynder is helpful but not required.
