About the Role
CMS Energy is hiring skilled Project Engineers III with expertise in Electrical and Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) engineering. In this role, you’ll help lead the design, development, and execution of major natural gas infrastructure projects—ensuring safety, compliance, and quality from planning through commissioning.
You’ll be a key contributor in our Gas Compression Engineering group, collaborating closely with engineers, project managers, contractors, and field personnel to deliver projects that support energy reliability and efficiency across Michigan.

About the Role
CMS Energy is hiring skilled Project Engineers III with expertise in Electrical and Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) engineering. In this role, you’ll help lead the design, development, and execution of major natural gas infrastructure projects—ensuring safety, compliance, and quality from planning through commissioning.
You’ll be a key contributor in our Gas Compression Engineering group, collaborating closely with engineers, project managers, contractors, and field personnel to deliver projects that support energy reliability and efficiency across Michigan.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and contribute to the planning, design, procurement, and construction of electrical and I&C systems in natural gas compression stations.
- Manage engineering documentation: specifications, permits, schedules, contracts, technical reports, and construction support.
- Serve as an onsite engineering lead, conducting field assessments, inspections, and project monitoring.
- Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to ensure project milestones are met on time and within budget.
- Maintain compliance with industry regulations, environmental standards, and CMS Energy safety protocols.
- Provide technical support and effective communication across project teams and stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in Electrical or I&C engineering (preferably within utilities, oil & gas, or industrial environments).
- Proven experience in the design, construction, or operation of industrial facilities and/or gas compressor stations.
- Skilled in developing and coordinating engineering documents, specifications, and procurement for consulting or construction services.
- Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to adapt to evolving priorities and field requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- OR
- 10+ years of relevant I&C or electrical design experience in lieu of a degree
- PE License (Professional Engineer) is preferred, but not required.
Work Conditions
- Some regional travel between project sites (Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, etc.) may be required.
- Standard business hours with potential for extended hours based on project demands.
