Project Engineer –Natural Gas Compression Projects
Employment Type: Contract through 12/31/2025 (High potential for extension)
Location: Hybrid –Grand Rapids, MI Area (Onsite: Mon/Tues/Thurs;Remote: Wed/Fri)
Position Overview
Consumers Energy is seeking a Project Engineer to support ongoing capital improvement projects at the Overisel Compressor Station and other facilities within our natural gas compression fleet. This newly approved role is critical to ensuring the successful design, procurement, and execution of key infrastructure upgrades.
This is a hybrid position based primarily onsite near Grand Rapids, MI. Candidates must be able to work at least three days per week onsite, with remote flexibility on other days. The role includes occasional field visits (up to 10%) to other compressor stations across Michigan.

Key Responsibilities
- Lead engineering and execution of capital improvement projects related to natural gas compression systems
- Design and specify piping systems in compliance with ASME B31.8
- Apply API 5L (line pipe) and API 60 (valves) standards during project execution
- Assist with equipment specification, procurement, bid evaluation, and contractor coordination
- Prepare and issue construction specifications;assess and review contractor bids
- Coordinate construction activities and provide technical support during field execution
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, consultants, and contractors to ensure project success
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field
- Minimum 5 years of applied engineering experience, preferably in natural gas or energy sectors
- Strong knowledge of ASME B31.8, API 5L, and API 60
- Experience in equipment procurement and managing construction contracts
- Understanding of federal and Michigan Gas Safety Standards
- Strong technical writing, specification development, and project coordination skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience with capital project execution in utility, petrochemical, or offshore energy industries
- Field engineering support for natural gas pipeline systems
- Familiarity with MI Gas Safety Standards
- Strong analytical, communication, and bid evaluation capabilities
Location and Work Requirements
- Primary work location: Overisel Compressor Station (near Grand Rapids, MI)
- Additional desk space available at Grand Rapids or Hamilton Service Centers
- 90% of field work will be at Overisel;occasional travel (~10%) to other sites may be required
