Duties:
This position will involve work at solar PV power plants maintaining, testing, and troubleshooting AC and DC circuits ranging from medium voltage 34.5kV to 12VDC. The equipment that will need to be maintained includes station service electrical equipment such as motors and motor controls, electrical switchgear, transformers, inverters, solar PV panels, panel tracking mechanisms, electrical protective devices, main and auxiliary generators, lighting, power supplies, HVAC systems security systems and battery support systems. This position will be responsible for troubleshooting and overhauling such equipment as well as preventative and predictive maintenance activities for the afore mentioned equipment. Solar Technician III has a higher level of responsibilities and qualifications than level one (I) or two (II) and is expected to be a subject matter expert and a leader for junior level techs within the safety and reliability-based maintenance areas.
 
Skills:   
  • Testing, maintaining, advanced troubleshooting, and replacing solar PV power plant related electrical equipment.
  • Maintain, advanced troubleshoot and repair Utility Scale Inverters (SMA, Sungrow, Santerno or Bonfiglioli preferred).
  • Perform advanced levels of Infrared, Ultrasonic and other predictive maintenance activities; Analyze results and suggest corrective actions.
  • Proven in depth knowledge of technical information from electrical schematics, vendor information, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Perform current and voltage readings as necessary and analyze findings with reports as needed.
  • Have advanced knowledge of reliability-based maintenance philosophies.
  • Lead plant related preventative, reactive, and predictive maintenance, scheduled by the Site Manager and/or Lead Technician, including performing infrared and ultrasonic data collection.
  • Ability to operate independently, safely, and efficiently to maximize power generation and availability.
  • Have after-hours availability be dispatched to site requiring immediate attention.
 
7AM-3PM - Mon-Fri
25% to 30% of time working nights Dusk (5-6pm) to 8 hours
On weekend once a month on call - up to 2 hours away on standby
 
Education:
  • Associates degree or equivalent desired.
  • 5 years of Solar Technician Experience Required.
  • Licensed Solar Installation (Nevada)
  • Certified NFPA 70E
  • Certified First Aid/CPR
  • Ability to prioritize workload to meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Advanced ability to use electrical test equipment such as, Digital Multimeters, Amp Clamps, and Insulation Testers with the ability to train other technicians in their safe and efficient use.
  • IR Thermography Level 1
  • Ultrasound Level 1
  • Advanced knowledge in and ability to lead and train others in electrical theory and troubleshooting techniques as well as best practices.
  • Operational power plant experience is preferred.
  • Willingness to work night shift, overtime and on-call including weekends and holidays when required.
  • Working knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft office suite.
  • Advanced knowledge of Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) and the ability to develop plan from schematic, isolate and lock out mechanical and electrical equipment and train others in proper LOTO of all equipment.
  • The use of PPE is required and must be consistently used in accordance with EGPNA, NFPA, or OSHA guidelines.
  • Travel up to 25% for training and site support.
  • Ability to rent a vehicle.
  • Ability to fly commercially.
  • Verbal and Written communication skills required.
  • Have safe and reliable transportation to and from Job site.
  • Able to relocate within 1 hour of job site.
  • Able to Lead Job Safety Analysis and Safety Observations.
  • Able to safely lift 50 lbs., use unpowered and powered hand tools and work outside in hot, cold and inclement weather.
  • The use of PPE is required and must be consistently used in accordance with EGPNA, NFPA, or OSHA guidelines.
