Position Overview
The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Staff Engineering Technician supports the Black & Veatch Distributed Infrastructure (Grid) team, focusing on grid substation civil design projects. Under general supervision, this role performs advanced technical functions involving civil design, electronic applications, and document control processes.
This position is heavily hands-on and requires advanced Autodesk Civil 3D expertise, specifically related to grading surfaces, drainage, utilities, and plan development for substation sites.

Position Overview
The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Staff Engineering Technician supports the Black & Veatch Distributed Infrastructure (Grid) team, focusing on grid substation civil design projects. Under general supervision, this role performs advanced technical functions involving civil design, electronic applications, and document control processes.
This position is heavily hands-on and requires advanced Autodesk Civil 3D expertise, specifically related to grading surfaces, drainage, utilities, and plan development for substation sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and modify site grading, drainage, and utility plans using Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation
- Support engineering and design teams by preparing accurate technical deliverables
- Apply foundational civil engineering principles to produce moderately complex design solutions
- Create, modify, and maintain CAD/BIM documentation, drawings, and project deliverables
- Review design inputs to ensure consistency with codes, standards, and project requirements
- Perform design calculations, material quantity takeoffs, and estimates
- Apply Black & Veatch quality standards and document control procedures to all deliverables
- Provide technical guidance to junior technicians and design staff
- Review deliverables prepared by others to ensure quality and compliance
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary design teams to exchange project information
- Maintain work assignments and schedules as required
- Support field activities and client-related coordination when needed
- Proactively stay current with new technologies, tools, and design processes
Required Qualifications
- Advanced experience with Autodesk Civil 3D, including:
- Proposed grading surfaces
- Site plan development
- Experience working on Grid Substation projects (required)
- Strong understanding of civil design standards, codes, and document control processes
- Ability to interpret project inputs and determine correct deliverable formats
- Experience ensuring compliance with quality programs and engineering standards
- Capable of handling complex technical assignments independently
Preferred Skills
- Bentley MicroStation experience
- Experience reviewing others’work and providing technical direction
- Exposure to field support or construction coordination
