Technical Writer & Trainer –EPM Startup, Testing, & Commissioning
Department: EPM Startup Testing & Commissioning –Consumers Energy
Employment Type: Contract Through 12/31/2025 (with potential for extension)
Location: Mid-Michigan (Flexible with hybrid work options)
Work Schedule: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday in-office (7: 00 AM –3: 30 PM typical), potential work-from-home on other days
 
About the Role:
Consumers Energy’s EPM Startup Testing and Commissioning Department is seeking a skilled Technical Procedure Writer and Trainer to support capital projects across various sites primarily in mid-Michigan. This role is critical in developing, maintaining, and delivering operational and startup procedures, including startup/shutdown, alarm responses, and maintenance documentation for newly installed systems, mainly in gas compression facilities.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain standardized technical procedures based on OEM manuals and installation guidelines.
  • Deliver training programs on new systems and operational procedures to operators, mechanics, and engineering staff.
  • Collaborate with startup testing analysts, engineers, vendors, contractors, and operations personnel during commissioning phases.
  • Travel to multiple sites within mid-Michigan to conduct hands-on system walkthroughs, training, and support commissioning efforts.
  • Follow established formatting templates and compliance standards for documentation.
  • Support ongoing procedural updates in response to equipment or operational changes.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and align with safety and operational protocols, including TSA training and risk assessments for site access.
 
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred;Associate degree in Science or Technical field acceptable with relevant experience.
  • Minimum 4+ years of technical procedure writing experience or equivalent expertise.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Teams) and collaboration tools.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly across Michigan compressor sites.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to transfer complex technical knowledge effectively.
  • Experience or familiarity with gas compression systems is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a small team supporting statewide operations.
 
Work Environment:
  • Hybrid work schedule with 3 days in-office and potential remote days, depending on location.
  • Frequent travel to field sites for training and commissioning activities.
  • Collaboration with engineering, operations, and vendors.
  • Safety compliance including personal risk assessments for site access.
